An industry expert said the move is aimed at “broadbasing Vodafone’s popular prepaid data packs in Kolkata and West Bengal circles, which will help it reach out to a wider target audience and combat Reliance Jio Infocomm more strongly in the state”.
Arvinder Singh Sachdev, Vodafone India’s business head (Kolkata & West Bengal), said the company’s immediate objective is to achieve 100 % 4G coverage in Kolkata and West Bengal circles by end-FY18. At present, 90% of both circles have 4G coverage, he said.
Last year, the telco invested Rs 1,300 crore in ramping up network and distribution in both circles, the company said in a media statement.
According to Sachdev, over 40% of Vodafone India’s 2.6 crore customers in Kolkata/West Bengal circles are 3G/4G data customers, while the majority remain 2G users.
