Restaurant cashier held for skimming details of cards

PUNE: Alert employees of a popular restaurant in Hinjewadi caught a newly recruited cashier stealing information from debit and credit cards using a skimming device. He was handed over to the police who arrested him on Saturday.

Suspect Vicky Ramavtar Agarwal (36) of Kondhwa joined the restaurant on November 23. In two days, he transferred data of six customers. Restaurant owner Ganesh Patil told TOI that he had advertised online for a cashier, but did not consider Agarwal as his salary expectations were high.

On November 21, Agarwal called Patil to say he needed the job and joined immediately.

An employee informed Patil about Agarwal’s movements while accepting customers’ bills through debit or credit cards. ” After swiping the card at the POS machine, Agarwal would put it in his trousers and watch when the customer entered his PIN,” Patil said.

Patil called an employee from his other restaurant to check what Agarwal was doing. “When Agarwal put the employee’s card in his pocket, we took him to Hinjewadi police and lodged a complaint,” Patil said.

Agarwal was booked under sections 379 (theft), 419, 420 (cheating) of the IPC and relevant sections of the IT Act. He has been remanded in police custody till December 1.
