Govt plans Wi-Fi hotspots in 222 fishing villages
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government is planning to introduce public Wi-Fi hotspots in 222 fishing villages in the state. The initiative is to expected to enable the government to reach out to fishermen community and issue alerts reading weather.
IT secretary M Sivasankar said that the government has included the proposal in the report submitted to Union government seeking Ockhi relief fund for the state. “Even if there is no central aid, the state will go ahead with the proposal,” he said. He added that smartphone penetration has increased among fishermen, who use it for various purposes such as arranging auction of their catch.
He also noted that the state has the highest smartphone penetration in the country. The government also feels that Wi-Fi would enable the fishers to do geo-fencing of boats, which was another hurdle the state faced during Ockhi.
