Google Maps has rolled out new offline features – SD card support and WiFi only mode – for Android that will allow users to save data on-the-go. In addition to saving an area of the maps for offline use later, users can opt to save downloaded maps to an external SD card. Having a device that supports SD card is obviously mandatory. Users can save a variety of information like holiday snaps or road trip playlists.

Also, users can choose to save on mobile data by taking Google Maps completely offline. Once the WiFi mode is switched on, Google Maps app will work offline, even without WiFi. While the app significantly relies on WiFi, it might still use a small amount of cellular data. While switching on the WiFi only feature, users will get a pop-up saying, “You should know…A small amount of data might still be used, but it will be significantly less while on Wi-Fi only.”

In case, users need to check for traffic or update offline maps; they can switch back to online mode from setting menu. The WiFi only feature was first spotted by Android Police late July. The report said the new feature is being rolled out for users in phases.

India is increasingly becoming a potential market for Google Maps. Google recently made changes to the app to make it more India-focused. The app now understands Hindi and offers direction in the language. Also, there’s offline feature and traffic alerts. We could expect the WiFi only feature to reach the Indian audience soon.
