Aadhaar-PAN Link: Here’s how you can link your PAN with Aadhaar through SMS
New Delhi: In order to enjoy seamless Income Tax services, citizens are mandated to link their PAN card with Aadhaar card. The last date to link PAN with Aadhaar is March 31, 2019. It may be noted that PAN card is one of the most important financial document in the country which also serves as a proof of identity.
PAN card is issued by the Income Tax Department under the supervision of Central Board of Direct Taxes. PAN card holders who are required to file income tax returns are mandated to link their PAN card with Aadhaar by March 31 in order to enjoy income tax services without a hitch.Read more ↓
There are many ways one can link their Aadhaar with their PAN card. They can either visit the income e-filing portal or they can use SMS facility to link their PAN card with Aadhaar.
In order to link Aadhaar with PAN using SMS, one has to type UIDPAN<12-digit Aadhaar number><10 digit PAN>, for example, UIDPAN 111122223333 AAAPA9999Q and send it to 567678.
In case a minor mismatch between PAN and Aadhaar, a One Time Password (OTP) is sent to the registered mobile number with Aadhaar. In a case where the name in Aadhaar is completely different from the name in PAN database, the linkage may fail. The PAN card holder is then required to change their name either in Aadhaar or in PAN database or visit personally to a designated PAN application centre of NSDL e-Gov or UTIITSL for biometric Aadhaar authentication.
A certain category of people is not mandated to link their PAN with Aadhaar. This exempted category includes
1. Individuals who are residing in the state of Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and Meghalaya.
2. Individuals who are non-resident.
3. Individuals who are eighty-years-old or above.
4. Individuals who are not a citizen of India.
You also visit the income tax e-filing website to link your Aadhaar with PAN. Just locate ‘Link Aadhaar’ option on the home page and proceed to enter your Aadhaar number, PAN, name as per Aadhaar and Captcha code. Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ green button and you can easily link your Aadhaar with your PAN card.
Worth mentioning here is that the Government had closed or put 11.44 lakh PAN cards in the inactive category last year. After the deadline of March 31, if you fail to link your PAN with Aadhaar, this may happen to your PAN card as well. Also, the Income Tax Department will be issuing income tax e-refunds from March 1, 2019, onwards in the bank accounts of only those individuals who have linked their respective bank account number with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) card.
If you want to check whether your bank account is linked with your PAN, just log in to the e-filing portal and go to ‘Profile setting’ option and select and select ‘Pre-validate your bank account’ and fill up all the details. If your bank is integrated with the portal, the pre-validation will done directly through EVC and net banking route.
